Game Pass Price Soars 50%

Microsoft’s gaming subscription service, Xbox Game Pass, has undergone a major price restructuring, with Game Pass Ultimate seeing a 50% price increase and PC Game Pass rising nearly 38%. The changes, which took effect on October 1, 2025, have sparked a significant backlash from the gaming community.

The Price Increase Details

Effective immediately, Microsoft’s premium Game Pass Ultimate tier has jumped from $19.99 per month to $29.99. This represents a 50% increase, or an additional $10 per month. The PC Game Pass tier also received a significant price increase, rising from $11.99 to $16.49, an approximately 38% increase. The new pricing structure is part of Microsoft’s broader reorganization of Xbox Game Pass, which introduced three tiers: Essential ($9.99), Premium ($14.99), and Ultimate ($29.99). The Essential and Premium tiers did not increase in price, as the burden is being carried by the most popular premium tier.

Microsoft’s New Features and Justification

Microsoft announced the new Game Pass Ultimate subscription includes the following features and additions:

Access to over 400 titles, playable on Xbox, PC and Xbox Cloud on supported devices
Ubisoft+ Classics (a $7-16 monthly subscription that includes access to select Ubisoft games)
Fortnite Crew (a $11.99 monthly subscription that offers monthly V-Bucks and exclusive items), which will become available in November 18
Cloud access to Xbox games on various devices, with higher tiers offering faster speeds
Access to over 75 new games annually, including the first-party titles on Xbox

The company’s pitch is that the new “biggest upgrade yet” for Game Pass Ultimate includes these extra additions and the re-structured pricing. The new Essential and Premium tiers also provide a more flexible tier for subscribers, with a monthly rate for $10.99 and $14.99 for the Essential and Premium tiers, respectively.

However, the new additions come to the price hike, and the term “hardly any new benefits” is not far-fetched. Microsoft is adding the new “Fortnite” and “Ubisoft+ Classics” to the new Premium tier, which replaces the previous $14.99 standard plan. For the new Premium tier, the price remains $14.99. The new features were added to the Ultimate tier, and the price increase is most serious for the new Ultimate tier, and not the new features for the price increase. The “Fortnite” and “Ubisoft+ Classic” will be added to the new Premium tier, which is $14.99, and that the price increase is only for the Ultimate tier, and therefore the new features are not just for the price increase.
